If You Break My Heart Trying too hard won’t go far How much is too much How much is not enough Hanging out here I’m in between there Up the creek here To down the stream there If you break my heart You pay for it If you break my heart You bought it Some decisions are incisions Much too late to make revisions Sorry’s just a suture Leave a scar into the future Pencil’s better than a pen Really try to change it again This time i’ve spilled the ink Gone, stained what you think If you break my heart You pay for if If you break my heart You bought it How you gonna pay for this one Don’t cost too much ain’t worth much Bought second hand Not in demand Over the counter Whopping twenty pounder Big old bloody heart Just another body part But if you break my heart You pay for it If you break my heart You bought it

If it wasn’t for the liquor and the weed I never would have made it through the winter Developed a habit of washing your hands To the point that your fingers would bleed What’s your name? “Hey i’m Patsy” Are you Irish? “No i’m Frankenstein” Here’s to the best of the ‘Backseaters’ I was a real Tina Turner in my time A real Tina Turner in my own mind In the times, i was a real Tina Turner in my mind I condensed my whole life into a gym bag Which was stolen tonight from your car My wallet, my keys, my shoes and photos They even took the voter registration card I put my mouth into a smile Let my heart drive Buy some new used clothes and i’ll be fine Well here’s to the crook that took my old life I was a real Tina Turner in those times I was a real Tina Turner in my mind I was a real Tina Turner in those times I was blind I was a real Tina Turner in my mind I remember New Orleans of the ‘60s When you could park anywhere Clothes lines strung up along Decatur Prostitutes and sailors everywhere But the times they have changed They cleaned up the Quarter Made more friendly for the tourists Here’s to the last of the soul shake swingers All the real Tina Turners of the times The real Tina Turners in my mind Genuine, all the real Tina Turners of the time What are you doing after work? I believe i’ll be going down to Molly’s If you don’t find me there slumped on the bar You can catch me at CheckPoint Charlie's Old Jim Smith is doing an open mic show I’ll play you some songs if you go Here’s to Sneaky Pete he’s always in the pocket He’s the real Tina Turner of our time The real Tina Turner of our time Genuine, He’s the real Tina Turner of our time.

Love 04:21
Diabetes and vaseline tears Keeping the creeps and junkies at bay Carlos ‘the Great’ Guitarlos Guarantee the guy can play A grieving woman stand like a statue Fulton at the Golden Gate Park Realizing that her lover left her She’s waiting around to get back her heart That he took when he left But he ain’t never coming back She’s a statue in the mist He ain’t never coming back After hours ‘if i stay too long’ A Creation song, is my favorite song Sleep tight, dream tonight Light is the feather Love is the dawn Dirty dawn comes to cut the cord And cast me into the burning light I was looking for an endless party A never ending holy night But the sunlight shows the stains Bleach the sidewalk start again Yeah the sunlight shows the stains Bleach the sidewalk in my brain Kaufman said “Life’s a saxophone And it’s being played by death” I say that life’s a guitar Distorted, clean, tremolo or direct Terry says “there are those who say why And others who will say why not?” Mother said “there are those of us Who never really know what they got” Punctuate the end with a shot Get out when the going gets hot Quit the game when it’s all they got Heaven help us From ourselves Heaven help us From the hell We’re letting inside Letting it steal us Letting it lie From the hell I’m letting inside But i’m gonna heal I’m gonna try I’m gonna love La la la love Love

You know how to calm me down You know what it takes I only want you here with me To help me to escape The lonesomeness i hate Love is not financial just to split the bills You only bring my time to life When you’re gone it kills It’s the lonesomeness that kills At the ‘Wayward Council’ Down at the ‘Two Left Shoe’ Dancing in a circle Belligerent on booze And tonight has finally blown its fuse Prophetic and pathetic Building up for nothing All will be forgotten Taped over and erased Cause it’s the moment and the place You know how to calm me down You know what it takes Only want you here with me To help me to escape It’s the lonesomeness i hate

Pigeons don’t fly south They just fly in circles As the Swan conducts the swarm From his cage at the bookstore And they’re making injections Out between the cars As a monster crane Devours a garage Pied piper of the flying rats Tossing seeds from the dirty old sack It’s a gray cloud of life Cut in half by a moonlight knife To the underpass Out of sight for the night I heard a cackle in the alley I heard a ‘wine soaked moan’ A crinkling of cans And oh, precious bottles I’ve got my head on a wall And my feet on a garbage can Got my ear on a wire As the whole world’s wobbling Pied piper of the flying rats Tossing seeds from a dirty old sack It’s a gray cloud of life Cut in half by a moonlit knife A serrated edge on my skin so white Wing nuts and screw balls Thieves galore Empty wallets and car alarms Glass diamonds on the sidewalk I saw them going through the pockets Of a drunken corpse Said “hey i was just helping him up. Hey I was just…” Pied piper of the flying rats Tossing seeds from a dirty old sack It’s a gray cloud of life As the Swan Agent World Finally makes his flight

The Waiter 05:19
A waiter in the Quarter walking home in his black and whites A car pulled up beside him They told him it’s your money or your life So the waiter started running They were much too fast They chased him down So he pulled out his corkscrew As he was being taken to the ground And the scuffle ensued “Leave me alone, i didn’t do anything to you guys!” The one who had him pinned Was the one who got the corkscrew in his head The other would-be robbers They were stunned They grabbed their friend and they just fled The waiter lay on the sidewalk He’s clutching his wine key in his hand But he knew he sunk it deep The guy was twitching Like an epileptic man I said it don’t come easy No it don’t come that easy It don’t come easy He ain’t no mark So don’t you start It’s not that easy The waiter found his feet And he found that his tips were still in his pocket He found the corner bar He had a cut it was bleeding bad He had to stop it So he took a bar napkin And he dipped it in a triple shot of scotch He rubbed it on that cut, You know It burned pretty bad but the bleeding stopped I said it don’t come that easy No It don’t come easy It don’t come easy He ain’t no mark So don’t you start It’s not that easy The waiter got to thinking maybe He should call the cops and report the crime They could check the hospital Maybe they’d find and injury Of the corkscrew kind But it’s unlikely His accomplices would have taken him in for help They probably took him to That river side Said “Adios our good friend Fare thee well And the river took the body Mighty miss she took the body Yeah the river took the body All the way to the Gulf You know, a fisherman found it Was swollen up like a tick I guess the guy got stiffed So watch who jump Best watch out who you rob It might not be that easy Not such a simple job Watch who you jump You’ll get a bit more than you plan You mess around with a hard working waiter With a wine key in his hand I said it don’t come easy No it don’t come that easy It don’t come easy He ain’t no mark So don’t you start It’s not that easy

My father was a fisherman In love with Robert Service My mother was a cheerleader In Esko, Minnesota My uncle introduced them And they really hit it off They thought they were in love They decided to get married And they had a couple kids One of them was me And my sister Jenny Well my father was thought to be The life of every party And my mother’s other women friends They looked at her with envy But what didn’t know Lurked within the lampshade Was a bitter man Was a selfish man With a hollow chest Didn’t have a heart That was my dear old man Well maybe they were victims Of what was expected of them It was just before the dawning Of the new sex revolution And maybe they thought marriage Was the proper thing to do When in reality they probably Just wanted to screw Oh the things you do When you want to screw Stupid things that you do Sometimes i feel a product Of a loveless interaction And i feel my heart was swallowed Somewhere in the last transaction Cause i saw the death of love Between my parents and their families And that really tore me up inside I was just six years old but I believe in love Protect your innocence Don’t give in to be bitter

Now and On 05:51
What happened to you this time You spend whole big bunches of time Looking behind you Did it give you regrets? Regrets like losing bets Except can’t pay it off Can’t pay the debt So forget about what happened Forget about it all Now you make your own deal Then you make the call It’s only now and on It’s now and on on ain’t so long I try to understand Where it’s go the devil knows Where i’m gonna land I’ve been shooting at the sun With a water gun A futile attempt Eventual Evaporation Can’t you see what happens Can’t you see it all Took years to learn the language We don’t talk at all It’s only now and on It’s now and on On ain’t so long And i feel like it’s never gonna get completed And i kneel on a false pew just like i was defeated Oh god, she looks at me with scorn Yeah, i looked at me with disdain I was warned not to ever ever go back again I don’t want to lose it again
