Reflecting back to the place where i was born, Duluth, Minnesota. Oh, MInnesota is a light hearted song remembering my youth in Duluth. Set in the mid 70’s. When the smelt still ran up the Knife River. Remembering skipping stones across the ice of Lake Superior which seemed like the sea to me. The hot dish and green jello with bananas at the gatherings. Wild rice and cream of mushroom. Revisiting Highway 61 with nods to Robert Zimmerman aka Bob Dylan and Leif Erikson. I remember it fondly and tried to pay homage with a song for the only real home town i’ve ever known. Duluth. The town I left when I was 6 but have gone back for weddings, funerals and concerts ever since. Oh, Minnesota! Back when i was young. Got the old Knife River cut right into my tongue.
lyrics
Oh, Minnesota
Oh Minnesota
Back when I was young
Got the old Knife River baby
cut right into my tongue
seen the thousand footers
float under the Aerial Bridge
Skippin’ stones across the ice
like livin inside the fridge
The Engar Tower
white birch trees
The greatest of the Great lakes
looks just like the sea, to me.
Oh, Minnesota
10,000 lakes
100,000 fishermen
out there getting baked
Duluth, Minnesota
up off hwy 61
Revisiting Robert Zimmerman
and Leif Erickson
The April showers
mostly snow
drink brandy from the Viking mug
stare into the ice fish hole below
Whoa! What is that?
Oh Minnesota
when we were kids
If you want just a little bit
in Minnesota, just a smidge
They’re servin’ lefse
and lutefisk
Green jello with bananas
what’s in that hot dish?
It’s cream of mushroom
wild rice
Frozen peas and carrots
hamburger
and tater tots on top tonight
What I will do is crush up some cool ranch doritos
in a baggie, sprinkle that on top, some Funyons
maybe a little cheese medley
and a key change
put that into the broiler
for a crispy little skin on top
well alright!
Oh Minnesota
Ski Doo in the yard
Purple People Eaters
and do you remember
the Minnesota North Stars?
Swarms of mosquitoes
and the loon are the state birds
Pronouncing every consonant
in every single word
F Scott Fitzgerald
Paul Westerberg
Prince and Judy Garland
Sinclair Lewis wrote the words
Are you sure?
Yeah, he wrote this book called “It Can’t Happen Here”
But it actually did happen here
just recently
it’s very disturbing
Oh Minnesota
where I was born
It gets above 32 degrees
and those people think it’s warm
Oh Minnesota
back when I was young
Got the old Knife River baby
cut right into my tongue
Australian singer-songwriter explores self-examination, loneliness, and post-pandemic malaise through delicate, empathetic folk pop. Bandcamp New & Notable May 5, 2024
I remember this being called The Initial Friend EP, but I hadn’t found Rilo Kiley when it was available. I found them between Take Offs and Landings and Execution of All Things and this was all ready like $100 on eBay. I’m so happy it’s been rereleased. Erickallen78
