The Living and the Dead
03:03
|
|||
Chose an easy rhyme
To fill these moments of your time
I tried to keep between the lines
Looking forward and behind
I’ve studied highway archeology
Poetry yet written
As it’s happening before me
At this moment of expression
It’s evolving and dissolving
Connecting and exploding
Building up and then eroding
It’s the endings i keep blowing
I play the skinny indie white boy blues
In scuffed up military style shoes
I’m a convenience store connoisseur
On a broken shoe-string budget tour
Flat broke folk
Just barely afloat
Sinking fast in an alligator moat
Getting old with no success
Soon forgotten put to rest
Crossed this country a million times
A trillion roads
A gazillion signs
A re-enactment is this life
These words are just a bite
From all those heroes that i’ve heard
Just paraphrasing words
To leave behind a song
A re-enactment of a song
Hey, i’m in love
with this living and the dead
Hey ,i’m in love
with the living and the dead
Living and the dead
I’m in love with a lover
who’s dead
Seen some highs and lows
I’ve seen those Akrons and Toledos
And you know we’ve done some shows
where not a single person goes
Driven’ 14 hours
Just to play it to the sound guy
As he’s reading his book
We’ve got to suck it up and try
As the bartenders playing on that
Megatouch machine
hear her long fingernails
tapping on that screen
It’s a cold bleak night
as the puddle’s bleeding light
Detroit’s abandoned
A casino’s in my sight
I gotta kill my time
I’m a ghost out on these streets
I’ll be sleeping in my truck tonight
Not sleeping in your ice cold sheets
Got a scrambled heart
It’s a little bit overcooked
I got a novel full of wishes
Missing from your book
There’s no insurance in this life
No protection from the night
Too many rules with no directions
You walk under the knife
It’s just this temporality
Creating fleeting moments
If you’re lacking in permanence
You better make your little moment potent
Hey i’m in love with this living and the dead
Hey i’m in love with the living and the dead
Living and the dead
I’m in love with a lover who’s dead

Ashes on the Highway
03:10
|
|||
Death is winning
all the time
When i die
gotta burn the body
Sprinkle my
ashes on the highway
Let the traffic
Spread the ashes
In the ditches
And the overpasses
If you don’t
Burn my body
Drag my body
Down the highway
Spread me out
Wear me down
State to state
town to town
I don’t want no fancy funeral
I don’t want you to make no fuss at all
Turn the radio up
Throw the ashes out the window
Don’t stop
Don’t worry honey
Just let it go
Out the window
If i
If i were a ghost
I wouldn’t choose to haunt this place
I would
Float into the atmosphere
And into outer space
Or i
Would find myself a hurricane
And join into the storm
I would
Take my little vapor
And add into its form
I don’t want no fancy funeral
I don’t want you to make no fuss at all
Turn the radio up
Throw my ashes out the window
Don't stop
Don’t worry honey
Just let it go
Out the window
Let it go
Out the window

Twenty Years
04:00
|
|||
All i got on me
Is my Angola Prison ID
Ain’t a place in this
whole damned city
Willing to hire me
It’s been 20 years
And a horn blows
From a river boat
It sounds the same
As the day i went away
You know it sounds
just the same
In 1979
Man i was always high
I don’t remember
Committing the crime
But i remember
Doing the time
It’s been 20 years
And a horn blows
From a sousaphone
To me it sounds
Like a moan
My eyes are
Not like yours
My eyes are froze
From the years
In a jail cell
In fear of my foes
It’s been 20 years
And a horn blows
From a river boat
Sounds the same
As the day
i went away
You know it sounds
Just the same

Dance of Spring
05:03
|
|||
Lover, laying in the ground
Lover, only one i’ve found
Liquor, come take her place
Miss her, make it erase
I remember the dance of spring
I remember the sweet sound now i hear nothing
I have, visited her grave
I have, seen the picture fade
I try, to get on with my life
I try, to find a love that’s right
I remember the dance of spring
I remember the sweet sound now i hear nothing
Tavern, has drunk up my life
Cocaine, most every night
One day, it’s gonna be okay
One sweet day, just quit and walk away
No, yeah yeah yeah
I remember the dance of spring
I remember the sweet sound now i hear nothing

See it Clear
03:03
|
|||
Poked her finger in my chest
then she wrapped it around my heart
She was ecstasy and sex
fingers shaped me from the start
I see the skin and i gave in
I drink the gin and i gave in
If i had power in my hands
I’d carve it into stone
Or make a stained glass human sculpture
Of childbirth and a mothers moan
If i saw it clear
It’s very blurry here now
I try to see it clear
It’s very blurry here
You gotta help it dear
I try to see it clear now
I called up my mom
She asked me what is wrong?
Said i don’t know ma
Could you tell me what is wrong?
She said you got too many notes in your song
Far too many notes in your song son
It never occurred to me
To just ride the C
Just try to find a beat
Wouldn’t it be sweet
If we could just find a beat
The bay ott
On the spot
Feel the ride
Gonna glide
Bass drum
Snare drum
Hi hat
It’s where it’s at
We got the one, two, three, four open door
Nothing more
Start to see it clear
Start to get it dear now
I start to see it clear
I start to get it dear
I see it crystal clear now
I think i got it dear
Now
Right now

Less than the Air
03:49
|
|||
Train’s comin’ gonna lay on the track
Happy right here laying on my back
Let the train wheel come take my life
Let the big steel make it alright
Cause i’ve got no friend to tell the trial
Lots enemies so quick to defile
S’pose i’m drunk again but i don’t care
All i know is i’m less than the air
So let’s not compare
Feeling sorry, are you feeling blue?
Down and out now and overdue
Feeling crumpled up and dented in
Are you trapped within’ your very own skin
It’s like a jail you can’t see the bars
Can’t escape it by bleeding through your scars
Self deprecation is a boring hand
You’re just bringing everyone down man
Feeling sacrificed you feeling slammed
Are you claustrophobic on this open land
Feeling smothered by the deep blue sky
Does the sunset hurt your eye
Well you’re not the only one who
Got caught in the rain
This whole world don’t
Revolve around your pain
You can go on now spin out in misery
I’ll take the sun and the sea
Well sham sham a lingon
Whoa dip dee dip
While my mental record
Starts to skip
Orange, lemons, limes and tangelos
See the coconut tree next to the mighty mango
The high Sierra is in my rearview mirror
Ain't it beauty, beautiful my lovely dear
We got time so let’s not abuse
Let’s wear holes in our shoes

Going Back to Wilmington
02:41
|
|||
I’m going to Wilmington
Wilmington by the sea
North Carolina baby calling
Calling me
I blew my mind out
Out in the big city
I’m going to clean out
In a small town by the sea
I met a girl with long black hair
Yeah she helped me lose it
Lose all my despair
I’m going to Wilmington
It’s where i left my heart
Inside a skeleton
At the Barbary Coast
Do you know that bar?
Down by the Cape Fear River
We watched the bridge lights gleam
The water calm and black
As it slowly meets the sea
She picked the best song on the box
Yeah she knows her music
Yeah, she knows what truly rocks
I’m going to Wilmington
That’s now where i belong
I’m going to Wilmington
Gonna write me a brand new song
I’m going to Wilmington
Wilmington by the sea
North Carolina baby calling
Calling me

I love her more than he could ever even hope for
I love her twice as much as all the love there is and more
I could say my love is bigger than the big apple
Like oxyphenbutazone in scrabble
Just like the like the stars are my chandelier
Just like these landscapes are my living room
Just like the highways are veins
I am the blood
I am the rain
I saw the stars align in 27 straight rows
I saw the trees becoming lovers in the shadows
I heard the crickets overpower every radio
I heard the sound of the silence kill my ego
Kill your ego
Kill all ego
And then the stars were our chandelier
And all these landscapes were our living rooms
And all these highways are veins
We are the blood
We are the rain
And you
You’re heaven to hold
We’ll never get old
You’re heaven to hold
Honey, you’re heaven to hold

Vaporize
03:30
|
|||
Naomi Uemura
climbed all the highest peaks
Everest...Aconcagua..Denali
He wanted to be the first to solo
Denali in the wintertime
He made the summit all alone
but on the way down
he died
i'm goin' home
vaporize
i'm goin' home
vaporize
The glacier melts and the rivers rise
he stayed at the Latitude in room 5
no one ever found the body
maybe he vaporized
i'm goin' home
vaporize
i'm goin' home
vaporize

The Transient
03:05
|
|||
I don’t know what’s for me
What is out there good for me
Where’s a place i could live
Feel at home where i live
I am the transient
Only feel good when i go
Let’s go
Down the road
‘Til we know
Where it goes
Where it went
Up around the corner
Out around the bend
Take the Dalton Highway
All the way to the end
Of the road
Back again
I don’t know what’s for me
What is out there good for me
What’s a job i could do
And feel good not so blue
I am the transient
Only feel good when i go
So let’s go
Down the road
‘Til we know
Where it goes
Where it went
Up around the corner
Out into the night
Take the Dalton highway
Past the last street light
I’m alright
Gone
Outta sight
|
||||
11. |
||||
It’s a song for the road
Snakey stretch of tar
Concrete and gravel
Stretching near and far
Those highways and byways
Lovely scenic routes
From the mazes of our cities
To the desolation south
For every stretch of road
There was a civil engineer
And a crew to lay it down
Through the heat
and the dirt
Through the years
They blasted through the bedrock
With sticks of dynamite
They dug the mighty tunnels
Worked all day and night
I was thinking about a bridge
That stretched across a gorge
And all the time it took
For the steel to be forged
For every stretch of road
There was a civil engineer
And a crew to lay it down
Through the heat
and the dirt
Through the years
Yeah for every stretch of road
There was a civil engineer
And a factory crew
To forge the steel
To build the bridge
Through the years
